NASA's Perseverance Mars rover is collecting samples that could be evidence of ancient alien life. But NASA's Mars Sample Return mission to bring them to Earth will now cost $11 billion and take two decades. NASA/JPL-Caltech/ASUNASA's original proposal for the Mars Sample Return is "mind-bendingly complicated," David Parker, director of space exploration at the European Space Agency, said in 2021. AdvertisementAn illustration shows a concept of how NASA's Mars Sample Return mission would launch Perseverance's samples from the surface of Mars. At the current price tag, Mars Sample Return would "cannibalize" other NASA missions, Nelson said.

CNN —NASA is seeking innovative methods that could help retrieve samples collected by the Perseverance rover on Mars in the future. The original design for the Mars Sample Return program, a partnership between NASA and the European Space Agency, was a complex one. Reviews of the program have recommended that the Mars Sample return should not cost more than $5 billion to $7 billion, Nelson said. “Mars Sample Return will be one of the most complex missions NASA has ever undertaken. “We are operating from the premise that this is an important national objective that we return the samples,” Nelson said.

He served on the NASA Mars Sample Return Independent Review Board in 2023. Within these tubes are priceless samples of Mars that hold the clues to when and how Mars went from Earth-like habitability to uninhabitable desolation. Mars Sample Return is among the most challenging and complex robotic missions ever attempted, requiring the largest lander ever put on Mars, which would carry a rocket to launch the samples off the surface into Martian orbit. Mars holds secrets about what makes it possible for a planet to support life, locked in the samples that await return to Earth. NASA must provide that plan to Congress as soon as possible so that Congress can move forward with adequate funding.

CNN —After completing 72 historic flights on Mars over three years, NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter mission has ended. NASA/JPL-CaltechThe NASA mission team only expected the chopper to carry out five test flights in 30 days. The chopper flew over areas of scientific interest to capture images and help the mission team determine Perseverance’s next targets for detailed analysis. “The Mars helicopter would have never flown once, much less 72 times, if it were not for the passion and dedication of the Ingenuity and Perseverance teams. History’s first Mars helicopter will leave behind an indelible mark on the future of space exploration and will inspire fleets of aircraft on Mars — and other worlds — for decades to come.”

CNN —Robotic explorers investigating Mars are currently out of touch with space agencies on Earth after hitting a giant communications roadblock. Mission controllers at NASA won’t send any commands to its fleet of orbiters and rovers, including Perseverance and Curiosity, for the next 10 days due to the Mars solar conjunction. During the roughly two-week period, the hot, energized gas continually spewed by the sun from its outer atmosphere can interfere with the radio signals that NASA uses to communicate with its Martian robotic explorers. A Mars solar conjunction occurs every two years when the sun moves between Mars and Earth. The Ingenuity helicopter, which has largely served as the Perseverance rover’s aerial scout, will also lie low and won’t conduct any flights during this time.

NASA's Perseverance rover captured a 1.2-mile-high dust devil on Mars on camera. Scientists say dust devils on Mars are much stronger than those on Earth. AdvertisementAdvertisementNASA's Perseverance rover caught a 1.2-mile-high Martian dust devil on camera that scientists say is way bigger than whirlwinds on Earth. If this dust devil were configured that way, its shadow would indicate it is about 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) in height." Dust devils on Mars are much stronger than Earth'sNASA said that Martian dust devils, while not as intense as Earth's tornadoes, are much stronger and larger than dust devils on Earth.

The latest evidence comes from an instrument called SHERLOC mounted on the six-wheeled rover's robotic arm that enables a detailed mapping and analysis of organic molecules. They obtained evidence indicating the presence of organic molecules in multiple rock samples, including some collected for potential return to Earth for future analysis. Signs of organic molecules were first detected on Mars in 2015 by a different rover called Curiosity, followed by more evidence in subsequent years. With Perseverance now detecting possible signatures of organic molecules, the evidence is accumulating that organic molecules may be relatively common on Mars, though at low levels. "There are both biotic and abiotic mechanisms that can form organic molecules.

CNN —After 63 days of silence, the Mars Ingenuity helicopter is talking again. The mission team anticipated that radio silence might occur. NASA/JPL-Caltech/ASU/MSSSThat’s because Ingenuity communicates with mission control at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, by relaying all messages through the Perseverance rover. And when Ingenuity took off for flight 52, a hill presented an obstacle blocking the helicopter and rover from communicating with each other. But Ingenuity has overcome landing on Mars, survived frigid nights, flying on Mars for the first time and numerous record-breaking flights since, and its journey to explore Mars like never before continues.

Mars ‘doughnut’ spotted by Perseverance rover
  + stars: | 2023-06-29 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
CNN —An image captured by the Mars rover Perseverance shows a mysterious doughnut-shaped rock on the red planet’s surface. Launched in July 2020, the Mars Perseverance rover continues to explore the planet’s 28-mile-wide (45-kilometer-wide) Jezero Crater for signs of ancient microbial life, according to NASA. Another rock could have been embedded in the center of the doughnut-shaped rock before weather eroded it, leaving a cavity, he added. The Mars doughnut isn’t the only pastry-shaped rock that has been found on the planet. In 2014, NASA’s Opportunity rover spotted a small rock that’s white on the outside, with a red interior — like a jelly doughnut, Lee said.

The Perseverance rover has captured new images that appear to reveal geologic evidence of a fast-flowing river that fed into Jezero Crater, the site of an ancient Martian lake. The bands of rocks in this image of "Skrinkle Haven" taken by the Perseverance rover may have been formed by a fast-flowing river. The rover also captured a mosaic of "Pinestand," where layers of sedimentary rock could have been formed by a deep, fast-flowing river. The Perseverance team is also analyzing other images taken by the rover. We struggle even with early Earth rocks to answer this question.
NASA's Mars rover found evidence to suggest deep, powerful rivers once raged on the red planet. The Perseverance rover took close-up images a specific region in Jezero Crater for the first time. The discovery may help scientists figure out what kind of ancient life existed on the planet. Scientists studying rock formations, features, and valleys on Mars, so far, have found evidence to suggest Mars was once covered by water. NASA/JPL-Caltech/ASU/MSSSAnother image from Perseverance further supports this idea of a powerful ancient river that once roared across Jezero Crater.
Ingenuity helicopter aces 50th flight on Mars

During its 50th flight, Ingenuity traveled over 1,057 feet (322.2 meters) in 145.7 seconds and achieved a new altitude record of 59 feet (18 meters). Since arriving on Mars with the Perseverance rover in February 2021, Ingenuity has flown for more than 89 minutes and 7.1 miles (11.6 kilometers). “When we first flew, we thought we would be incredibly lucky to eke out five flights,” said Teddy Tzanetos, Ingenuity team lead at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in a statement. The rotorcraft has faced numerous challenges since it first detached from the belly of the Perseverance rover more than two years ago. The rover team has a job to do and a schedule to keep.
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — What’s a dust devil sound like on Mars? It’s about 10 seconds of not only rumbling gusts of up to 25 mph, but the pinging of hundreds of dust particles against the rover Perseverance. Photographed for decades at Mars but never heard until now, dust devils are common at the red planet. The microphone picked up 308 dust pings as the dust devil whipped by, said Murdoch, who helped build it. Of the 84 minutes collected in its first year, there’s “only one dust devil recording,” she wrote in an email from France.
Other missions have gathered images, weather data and dust measurements of these events, and the NASA InSight lander even recorded seismic and magnetic signals created by the dust devils. The Perseverance rover took a selfie over a rock nicknamed "Rochette" on September 10, 2021. While this sounds like a massive whirlwind, it’s the average size for Martian dust devils, Murdoch said. This figure shows the size of the dust devil in relation to the Perseverance rover. From its perch high on a ridge, Opportunity recorded this image of a Martian dust devil.
CNN —More than a year and a half after its first flight on Mars, the Ingenuity helicopter has set a new record. “Ingenuity’s success has led to NASA’s decision to take two Ingenuity class helicopters on the Mars Sample Retrieval Lander scheduled for later in this decade,” wrote Bob Balaram, Ingenuity chief engineer emeritus, in a NASA blog update. A more capable Mars Science Helicopter with the ability to carry almost 5 kg of science payloads is also in early conceptual and design stages.”Mars sample collectionMeanwhile, the Perseverance rover continues to collect intriguing samples from Mars. The cache will be collected by future missions during the Mars Sample Return campaign and returned to Earth in the 2030s. The Perseverance rover recently used a specialized drill bit to collect its first samples of broken rock and dust.
NASA's Perseverance rover has collected several "tantalizing" rock samples from an ancient river delta on Mars, setting the stage for an elaborate future mission that aims to retrieve the specimens and bring them back to Earth. Perseverance has been exploring the 28-mile-wide basin of Jezero Crater since it touched down on Mars in February 2021. The rover previously found igneous rocks, likely formed deep underground through volcanic processes, on the crater floor. Perseverance has collected 12 "scientifically compelling" rock cores to date, along with one sample of the Red Planet's atmosphere. Subsequent missions will send another spacecraft to Mars to collect the samples and ferry them back to Earth for more detailed analysis.
